A carpenter's mate, veteran of the War of 1812, builds a house on a grand scale in Vermont, and over the next 180 years its occupants include a treasure-hunter, a remarkably courageous and outrageous woman, a spectacularly cantankerous Yankee, a dipsomaniac genius, a woman of overpowering beauty and determination, a Native American totally mute, and a child of almost supernatural goodness. The characters are the author's invention, but the matrix for the story, both in time and in space, is factual and real.

I picked up RIGHT HERE because Peter Grudin was a friend in high school who I hadn’t seen for over 50 years, and I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed his book. RIGHT HERE takes place at a specific latitude and longitude in Vermont, starts with construction of a house in the early 1800’s, and follows the stories of those who lived in it to present time. I liked the short, crisp sentence writing style right away and found myself interested in the construction details of the house by the book’s first character; ships carpenter Elias Blood. However, I did get concerned that 373 pages with a house as the central character might get a little tedious. Fortunately, the opposite happened, the characters and their stories became more complex and intriguing as I read on. The next section combines the lives and times of Gus Blood, his wife Marian, and her lover Henry who get into some peculiar situations that begin to define the style of the novel. But the book really gets going when Hector, Marian’s illegitimate son, escapes from a nursing home to return to the Vermont location with his grand daughter. Hector is a memorable character, and his eccentric family, friends, and enemies make for great reading. The book has of plenty of intrigue and comedy, with characters you love to hate and characters you love to love. The author brings it all together in a satisfying way at the end of the novel. RIGHT HERE fits the genre of a number of contemporary American authors; I recommend RIGHT HERE to anyone who likes books by John Irving, Richard Russo, or Jim Harrison.Product details

Boring
Bought this for my Husband He loved it and could not put it down. I will read next.
As the title states, the story revolves around a place and a home in Southern Vermont. It traces the family who lived there over generations, and their friends and foes. The author describes the landscape and the people who live there eloquently. They are a different breed, strong and courageous. The women in the story are particularly resilient and surprisingly well drawn-- by a male author. Beautifully written book and I highly recommend it.
This is a beautifully written book with a remarkably original cast of country characters--one very strong woman at the center--and an exceptionally finely wrought sense of place. The story centers around a single piece of property in a part of southern Vermont rarely visited by tourists, and it brings that place to life with a gritty honesty and a physicality that I loved. There's plenty of dry humor, moments of tenderly depicted sexual tension, some social commentary, and a realistic feel that only the best writers can bring to a page. Without using the cheap tricks of most modern page-turners, it draws the reader in and makes you feel like a part of their lives. I heartily recommend it.
